Another Nordic invasion is upon Dublin, this time in the form of new Scandinavian design supplier Nordic Makers, which inaugurates its online shop today. Infinitely tasteful wares in magical shapes from makers in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland are now available in the recently opened (and incredibly attractive) shop in Dun Laoghaire’s George’s Street, and online (with quick delivery), so no more browsing obscure Norwegian artist sites and waiting weeks for our parcel (okay, my parcel).
This is a carefully curated collection where each product is hand-picked by the owners, judging from their Instagram updates. Danish duo, Dr Louis Weyhe Funder (a design and architecture historian and Danish modern furniture expert – that explains it!) and business brain Klaus Kristian Sorensen run the latest Scandi design venture to reach Ireland. The store showcases an impressive and eclectic range of high-end furniture, sumptuous textiles, out-of-this-world lighting, ceramic wares and sweet prints and more. A nice touch are the lovely quotes from the makers themselves which accompany the product descriptions, so that you learn a new story when you buy one of these beautiful pieces. I especially love the unique leather products – not just your run-of-the-mill wallets and purses here; see pendant lamp below.
My little lust list looks like this:
“The LIMITED textile line is designed with residual furniture fabrics by the Danish label Kvadrat, combined with full grain leather. The line consist of CUSHION and bags. They are available only in a limited edition, after which the design will change.”
“Abstract City is created as a continuing and evolving series, which is made from the idea about creating compositions and abstract forms, which although clearly abstract have elements of the figurative in it as well. It is inspired by people and architecture.” – Clara Selina Bach
“The ML01 LED lamp series is designed and hand cut by Moijn in Copenhagen. From a flat material ML01 transforms into a special lamp which due to its asymmetrical form stands out from the crowd. The ML01 series is a nordic object which focuses on the environment, materials and aesthetics.” – Kristoffer Munk (Moijn)
“With the Skala series I wanted to create a vase series that is beautiful as well as functional. At the same time I wanted to create a vase that acts as a blank plate from where the glaze can flow into each other and creates beautiful colour variations. The vases are made in porcelain and glazed with two matt glazes that flow together on the outside of the vases.” – Kristina Vildersboll
“Rollin’ Chair was created with the idea of creating a chair with a simple visual expression and an honest construction. Upholstery is very rarely used as load-baring element, but in this chair it is! The material is rolled together and also makes the chair very comfortable as well as creating an unusual and honest expression.” – Nicolai Estanga Hansen
“Sometimes it’s best just to wait. Other times it’s not so good! Pregnancy makes ‘the act of waiting’ take on a completely new meaning. Being pregnant is something completely wonderful and then at the same time it’s something that is hard. One minute you feel beautiful and elegant, and the next minute you feel sleepy as never before!” – Mie Frey Damgaard
